One of the most expected days in the year is Memorial Day, marking the start of new weather conditions and giving people a break out from the daily routine of home or/and work. Many cities around the States offer several places and events taking place during this weekend and New York City is no an exception.
So if New York is your place of residence or it is part of the plan for the date, here is a list of the parts of the city, activities or places that can be visited during this time.
- BROOKLYN
Plenty of activities take place in this area during Memorial Day, like the annual Memorial Day Parade sponsored by the US Military Veterans of King County where several institutions such as the FDNY, NYPD, along with high schools marching bands and with the added attraction of the presence of antique automobiles. There is also the Great Brooklyn Grill Out event where a good barbecue can be enjoyed thanks to the NYC Hot Sauce Expo Producers. If attractions, rides and a great deal of food places are part of the plan, Coney Island is the place to visit in Brooklyn.
- NEW PALTZ
A good reason to pay a visit to this place is the Woodstock-New Paltz Art and Crafts Fair, where several artists from all over the country offer performances and show off their creations. Furthermore, a Memorial Day Parade takes place in the area starting on Main Street until North Manheim Street with a memorial service for its closing.
- HARRIMAN STATE PARK.
Planning to go hiking near New York City on Memorial Day, the best place to give it a try is the Harriman State Park. The second largest park in New York State offers plenty of natural escapades along the 200 miles hiking trails. Camping is allowed in the zone, but it has to be booked beforehand.
- ALBANY
The capital of New York offers, as many other parts of the State, a parade to homage those who died during wars. After the parade, there is a ceremony at Academy Park. Some local attractions can be visited such as the USS Slater DE- 766, a remembrance ship from World War II. Additionally, a boat cruise on the Hudson River can be taken here.
- HUDSON
Fans of culinary delights can pay a visit to the Hudson area during the Memorial Day holiday. Plenty of restaurants offer the top meals that are enjoyed by locals and visitors. It is a two or three hour car trip from New York City worth to try.
