Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great Indian Sale that took place last week have made tremendous profits over the past 5-6 days. The biggest sales have come from the smartphones for both these e-commerce companies.
Redseer analyst had estimated the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of the first two days of both the sales to have crossed $1.5 billion, and some other analysts considered it to have been between $1 billion and $1.5 billion.
While Flipkart’s Big Billion Days took place from 10 to 14 October, Amazon extended it for one more day and had it’s from 10 to 15 October.
Now that the sales have ended, the estimates show Flipkart continuing to lead over Amazon, like previous years, in terms of GMV. But Amazon is said to have exceeded its internal sales target.
Amazon Great Indian Sale approximations
This year’s festive season is said to have been Amazon’s best ever in terms of sales, thanks to the smartphones. Amazon India head Amit Agarwal confessed that the event did not just surpass their expectations in terms of size and scale, but it also got penetrated in the broad base of India.
Amit also added that Amazon had paid attention to two particular areas, one of them being new customers and their reach and second being the Prime member signups.
While Amit did not share the Amazon’s exact sales number, he did disclose that 80% of its new customers came from small towns as well as there was almost three times surge in Prime member sign-ups.
He also gave an approximation of the sale of smartphones saying that during this discount season, the total premium phone sales that happened on Amazon’s platform was more than what usually happens in one month of all online sales in India.
Flipkart’s Big Billion Days Records
Even on Flipkart, the highest sales are said to have come from smartphones section.
The Senior Director at Flipkart, Smrithi Ravichandran speaking on the first day sales had said that the company had sold around 1 million mobile phones within an hour and crossed 3 million by the end of the day. This achievement made Flipkart, a single retailer in India to have sold the highest number of smartphones in a day.
She also had included that this one hour sale alone had fetched the e-commerce giant a whopping Rs.1000 crore.
At the end of this festive sale, Flipkart’s spokesperson shared that the company had smashed all the pre-existing records and had set new benchmarks for the entire Indian retail industry.
The spokesperson added in the email that the Flipkart had recorded over 70% share of the entire Indian e-commerce market in this five day-The Big Billion Days, 18 sale.
Overall estimates
After smartphones, the highest sold items were from Fashion and Large Appliances category. It is estimated that around $120 million of fashion items and $170 million of large appliances in the initial first two days itself.
Both Flipkart and Amazon claimed to have increased the customers in the initial days of the sale compared to their last year sale in the same period. Most of the traffic is said to have come from tier 2 cities.
